Hamsters are very small and very cute, but it is difficult to see such a small female hamster if she is pregnant. If you wait until discovery, the female hamster will probably give birth at this time. So how can you tell if your hamster is pregnant?

How to tell if a hamster is pregnant

The gestation period of hamsters is 18-22 days. There will be no obvious changes in the first 10 days of pregnancy. Generally, the symptoms will be more obvious before giving birth.

First: In estrus, if the hamster no longer goes into estrus after mating, it is likely to be a sign of pregnancy.

Second: The nipples change. The nipples begin to become red, swollen and protruding, and white lotion may even flow out in the later stages of pregnancy.

Third: Sleep begins to increase and symptoms of drowsiness appear.

Fourth: Make nests frequently. Under normal circumstances, both male and female will build a nest. However, when the female hamster always feels that her nest is not big enough and frequently tries her best to build a nest, you should pay attention.

Fifth: Store food. Two days before giving birth, the mother hamster will not go out in the nest she has built, so she will save some fine grains in this early period. On the one hand, she can solve her own food and clothing problem. On the other hand, the newborn hamsters can also eat the stored grains.

How to get a hamster pregnant

First of all, you must have a male hamster and a female hamster. First, let them live separately. They must not be far apart. They must live next to each other so that they can see and smell each other. After living for a few days, observe that they are in good condition and then put them in a cage.

After finishing, remember to separate the male barn and the female barn into separate cages, otherwise the male barn will bite the female barn’s babies to death when the female barn gives birth to a baby. However, the female barn’s lifespan will be shortened after giving birth once.

How long does it take for hamsters to give birth?

Hamster reproduction, under normal circumstances, hamsters that are 3 months old are fertile. After successfully mating with a male rat, it takes about three weeks from pregnancy to giving birth to a baby. Generally, about 3-5 babies can be born, and the eyes can open in about 7 days. Please note that it is best to separate the baby from the male rat, as the male rat may eat the baby.

The mother hamster may bite her unborn child to death. If she does not bite him to death, if the child is left alone, the mother hamster will eat the dead child herself. The dead child is a good nutritional supplement. For the mother hamster, the mother hamster will leave some of the baby hamsters to raise them.
